Live Fire 5.0

The level 5 Live Fire, located out of COP Vegas, saw A Squadron RCD employ both traditional reconnaissance tasks and operate as a fire base along with Sabre Squadron from the LdSH (RC).
A Squadron arrived late on the night of the 26th of January to prepare for the live fire exercise. Day one consisted of battle procedure for the combat team attack which was comprised of over 350 personnel and 50 plus vehicles. While the combat team leadership was preparing for the following day, the set up of living quarters and the “RCD House” was ongoing. The RCD house consisted of fresh fruit and other snacks but the best feature was a small entertainment area which included a projector, DVD player, laptops, and speakers. The RCD House quickly proved to be an important asset towards overall squadron morale.
The day of the operation saw both 1 and 2 Troops established in a tunnel providing security of the proven route into Alpha pass. This formation provided ample security for the Combat Team’s movement throughout the operation. We then held our position while the Combat Team withdrew after the daytime iteration. Once all assets were out of the Area of Operation, Recce Squadron maintained a “foot on the ground”, holding our positions leading into night operations.Upon completion of the operation, half of the squadron re-deployed to KAF to prepare for follow on tasks while the remainder of the squadron stayed in COP VEGAS to participate in another iteration with the LdSH (RC).
The Squadron’s final day in COP VEGAS saw patrols from 1 and 2 Tp employed in various roles throughout the operation. A patrol from 2 Tp was tasked with gaining “eyes on” the routes leading to all three objectives. This involved the patrol dismounting 4 personnel and scaling a mountain to do so. During the mid-day withdrawal, ease of movement for the return of the Combat Team was maintained by both patrols providing visual security of the proven ground. Once both Observation Posts had collapsed within each other, the patrol from 2 Tp moved into firing positions to secure the western flank alongside the rest of the Combat Team. They were eventually relieved by the patrol from 1 Tp once all rounds were expended. Once completed all call signs began their move back to KAF.
As stated by the Battle Group Commander and RSM, these most likely marks our final live fire exercise before deploying to Afghanistan. Best of luck to all.
