Message from The Officer Commanding A Squadron
Posted November 30, 2010
It seems like just weeks ago that A Squadron began training for our recently completed seven month deployment to southern Afghanistan. I truly believe that despite the length of pre-deployment training, the crewman and enablers of the Squadron were more than prepared for the tasks they were assigned in the extreme conditions of Panjwa’i District. As a multi-purpose combat enabler and manoeuvre element of the Canadian Battle Group, the Squadron was able to contribute on numerous fronts even on the governance and development realms having led the Operational Coordination Centre for the District of Panjwa’i for over three months. Often complementing the Companies, the Squadron like many Recce Squadrons before it, gained the reputation of being the “Swiss Army Tool” of the battle group. The seven months of deployment spanned many very distinct seasons in this troubled area of Afghanistan and the soldiers preserved in light of a vicious fighting season. At the end of our time, the weather turned rapidly to a bitter evening cold with very little vegetation with the impending rainy season just around the corner.
Throughout the month of November, the Squadron sent their soldiers home while “Escadron A” of the 12 RBC began their infill. Being afforded the opportunity to plan a thorough relief in place, the Squadron handed over full control to Major Christian Caron and Sergeant-Major Steph Daigle on 27 November 2010. A very cohesive team, we know they will have a successful tour and wish them well.
Now that we have begun our re-integration, it is clear that the priority is re-acquiring balance in our personal lives. We are blessed to have the opportunity to re-unite with our loved ones for Christmas and equally the chance to enjoy many weeks of leave before returning to work in the New Year. We look forward to seeing our families, friends and regimental brethren in the days, weeks and months to come.
Be well.
- Bold and Swift –
Major Christian Lillington
