Biography of CWO DW Head, CD
44th RSM of the RCD

CWO Head began his military career in July 1979 first as an Air Force technician in Kingston, ON. In February 1980 he decided to try the Armoured Corps and has not looked back. His first posting was to the 8th Canadian Hussar’s (8CH) in Petawawa. Throughout his entire time in Petawawa he served with B Sqn in various crew positions as well as a 5-month tour in Egypt as an AVGP test driver with GM.
In July 1983, CWO Head was posted to the RCD then stationed in Lahr, Germany and served first with RECCE Squadron until 1985 and then C Sqn after it became the 3rd operational tank Sqn in the Regt, the highlight of which was his entire troop’s participation in the Canadian Army Trophy Competition (CAT 87).
August 1987 CWO Head was posted to the RCAC School in Gagetown, NB. In December of that year he was promoted to the rank of Sgt and employed as the Troop WO in 1st Tp, Training Support Squadron. Realizing that there had to be a better way of life, CWO Head pursued the tactical aviation world and became a Tactical Helicopter Observer. On successful completion of the Helicopter Observer Course in July of 1983, CWO Head was once again posted back to Lahr, Germany where he served with 444 Tactical Helicopter Squadron employed as a line observer and where much fun was had!!
In 1992, 444 Squadron was disbanded in anticipation of the Base closure and repatriation of the Canadian Troops from Europe and as a consequence, CWO Head was posted again to the 8CH (still in Germany) where he remained until July 1993 and was subsequently posted back to the RCAC School in Gagetown, NB that same year.
Throughout the course of the next 9 years, CWO Head would spend his time between the RCAC School and the Independent Tank Squadron in Gagetown NB. Promoted to MWO in 2001, CWO Head finished his last year at the RCAC School as the SSM, Training Support Squadron. Finally, in July of 2002, CWO Head was posted back to the RCD as the SSM D-Squadron. In August 2003, he deployed on Op Athena (ROTO 0) to Kabul, Afghanistan as the SSM ISTAR Coy. He has served in all positions as a SSM within the Regt.
CWO Head was promoted to his current rank in June 2007. CWO Head assumed the appointment of RSM RCD on the 28th June 2008. CWO Head is married to the former Petra Goett of Stuttgart, Germany. They have 2 children, Samantha and Joshua.
