August 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you as the Officer Commanding B Squadron of the Royal Canadian Dragoons, an armoured reconnaissance unit based in Petawawa, Ontario. The Squadron Sergeant-Major, Master Warrant Officer Kevin Mathers and I are honoured to have the privilege of commanding the finest soldiers in the country.
As you well know, your loved one will deploy as part of the Canadian Forces commitment to NATO in Afghanistan. Our deployment will be approximately six months in duration. Our first flights will most likely depart Canada in mid-September and we will begin to return to Canada in March 2010.
I would like to remind you of the services that the Canadian Forces offers to family and friends of soldiers who are deployed:
The CFB Petawawa Deployment Support Centre (DSC) provides support and information and can be used to get
urgent messages to deployed soldiers. The DSC is manned 24/7 with bilingual staff and can be reached at
1-877-218-9993, or via internet at http://www.army.forces.gc.ca/DSC_Petawawa.
Military Family Resource Centres (MFRCs) are located across Canada (as well as several in the US and Europe)
and offer a variety of services to immediate and extended military family. You can locate your nearest MFRC and
obtain information on MFRC services at http://www.cfpsa.com/en/psp/dmfs/mfrccontact/index.asp or by calling
613-995-6792.
Should you wish to send your loved one mail while we are deployed, our address can be found on the back of this letter, as well as some important contact numbers. All mail will be forwarded to our soldiers no matter where they are located. Please keep in mind that mail delivery often takes many weeks to reach us.
Please do not hesitate to make use of the many resources available to support you and your family while your loved one is away from home. Finally, I invite you to follow our deployment through the B Squadron website http://www.dragoons.ca/bsqn.html.
Sincerely,
Major M.N. Popov, CD Master Warrant-Officer K.J. Mathers, CD
