Biography of Major Mark N. Popov, CD
Officer Commanding B Squadron

Major Mark Popov joined the Canadian Forces in 1991 and has served in the Royal Canadian Dragoons as a Leopard Main Battle Tank and Reconnaissance (Recce) Troop Leader, armoured car Squadron Liaison Officer, Recce Squadron Battle Captain, Recce Squadron Second-in-Command and as the Regimental Adjutant. He assisted his fellow Canadians during the 1997 Red River Flood and 1998 Eastern Canada Ice Storm and served in the Former Yugoslavia with NATO’s Stabilization Force in 1998-99. He served as a United Nations Military Observer on the Syrian Golan Heights and in South Lebanon’s Chebaa Farms with the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization from 2001-2002. He has also served in Afghanistan as part of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force in 2005. Promoted to his present rank in September 2006, he served for two years in National Defence Headquarters as a personal staff officer to the Chief Military Personnel, the Canadian Forces’ chief of human resources. Major Popov is an Armoured Gunnery Specialist and has completed the United Nations Military Observer and Basic Parachutist Courses. Major Popov earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Vermont’s Norwich University in 2008 and he has been awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration, Deputy Chief of Defence Staff and Chief Military Personnel Commendations. Major Popov is currently the Officer Commanding B Squadron, The Royal Canadian Dragoons.
