Michael R. McNorgan, Major (Retired)

Major McNorgan retired after serving 39 years in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps, in both regular and reserve regiments. He is the author or co-author of six books dealing with mounted warfare.

“The Royal Canadian Dragoons, Canada’s senior cavalry/armoured regiment, has been a part of our national story almost since Confederation. Indeed, the story of the RCD is an integral component of the larger story of Canada. The North West Rebellion, The Yukon Field Force, The South African War, the Dragoons played an important role in all of these major events. They served  in the  many wars of  the following century as well  as in the  various  peacekeeping and
peace enforcement operations that appear in today’s headlines. However, maintaining the history and heritage of an organisation that has been in existence for almost 125 years is not easy, nor is it cheap. The task of preserving artefacts and documents, researching and writing history is one that requires dedicated and knowledgeable personnel, time, and strong financial resources.

The RCD Guild has undertaken the duty of preserving its great heritage so that future generations will know the Regiment’s story and be encouraged to emulate its triumphs. Major projects are being undertaken; each carefully designed to preserve a unique aspect of RCD history. These projects need your support, please be generous.”

Heritage Programs

·         *Celebrating a Legacy of Leadership - Our regiment was raised on December 21st 1883.  In 2008, we will celebrate our 125th Anniversary.  Annually, we commemorate the liberation of Leeuwarden (Netherlands) by the Regiment on April 15th 1944 and the action at Leliefontein (South Africa) on November 7th 1900 where three Dragoons were awarded the Victoria Cross.

·         *Dragoon Park - the park continues to be developed including erecting a beautiful new monument designed to honour fallen Dragoons.

·         *Museum and Archives - The archives ensure access to our rich heritage and permit future generations to research their ancestors as far back as the Boer War.  The Regiment also displays its history at the museum in Petawawa, and soon at a new one to be built in Downsview Park (Toronto, ON) in this way we exhibit our history to Canadians as a vivid and rich act of remembrance.

·         *Vehicle Restoration - as part of preserving our heritage, it is the goal of the Guild to acquire, by purchase, loan or restoration, the vehicles of our Regimental service.
