RCD Family Day 2010
Written by MCpl J.U. Whalen  - HQ Sqn
Once again the time of year is upon us to show our appreciation to our extended regimental family by hosting the annual Royal Canadian Dragoons’  Family Day.  All too often the military members of the regiment receive deserving accolades for a job well done without recognition being given to those whom make many sacrifices behind the scene. Those people are the family members of all who serve within the RCD.

As with other years this year was no exception. The weather decided to co-operate and all the planning and preparation culminated in a great time for all who participated.  Headquarters Sqaudron was tasked with planning and hosting the event and there was no shortage of activities for the whole family to participate in.

Maintenance Troop created a challenging “Kiddie-Commando” obstacle course that proved to be a hit for the kids as it was both creative and fun to race to the finish! After the commando course there was a rope bridge to test their agility by climbing across the rope, trying to get to the end without falling off! A bouncy castle was set up near the parade square and on the parade square there were a number of activities to try out, including a dunk tank where a string of junior officers bravely took the seat, a hockey net shooting gallery and the Base Fire Department was gracious enough to bring their brand new ladder truck to set up a static display.  D Squadron provided two LAV IIIs and crew, commanded by MCpls Wes Clark and Darrell Christianson. They provided an opportunity for visitors and family to experience a ride around the base in an armoured fighting vehicle, giving them a brief overview into what it is like to operate in that environment.

The Regimental Cook prepared a variety of snacks and refreshments along with hamburgers and hotdogs for everyone’s enjoyment and the Signal Troop provided music through out the entire festivities. There was face painting, clowns and a “freezie” stand available to help cool down after taking in all the venues.

Family represents one of the few dedicated times throughout the year where the soldiers and their families get to gather and socialize and grow as a regimental family.  In all, everyone had a good time and special thanks goes out to all who participated in making RCD Family Day 2010 a success.
