Early in 2007 the RCD aquired a forgotten piece of Regimental history. The piece of history was one of only 2000 Staghounds that were ever produced, and it is one of only five known to still be running. Very few countries used the Staghound during WWII, and this particular one is a T17E1; a later type that was powered by two side by side GMC 270 CID truck engines producing 104 bhp gross each. It mounted a 37 mm gun and three 30 cal MGs; one for the bow gunner/radio operator, a coax and one for for an optional anti-aircraft turret. The Staghound had a crew of 5, with the driver and radio op/bow gunner in the hull, while in the turret was the crew commander, loader, and the gunner sitting on a floor seat.
This was the Regiment's main fighting vehicles throughout the war. The Staghound took Dragoons through Italy and Europe and was the first vehicle into Leeuwarden. During the partial restoration, numerous items were found inside the vehicle including old ammunition and a 1943 Dutch coin.
